A27 Sussex: Delays warning as 12mph convoy begins journey
Delays are expected on the A27 in Sussex today as a convoy of military vehicles moves along the road at 12mph.
The convoy, which is made up of around 50 vehicles, will be travelling from the Port of Shoreham to Salisbury Plain.
The journey is expected to take around eight hours, and the convoy will be escorted by police.
Delays are expected on the A27 between Shoreham and Chichester, and drivers are being advised to find alternative routes.
The convoy is part of a military exercise that is taking place on Salisbury Plain.
The exercise, which is called Exercise Iron Warrior, will involve around 30,000 troops from the UK and other NATO countries.
The exercise will test the UK's ability to respond to a major military threat.
The convoy is one of a number of military exercises that have taken place on public roads in recent months.
In April, a convoy of around 100 military vehicles travelled along the M4 motorway in Wiltshire.
The convoy was part of Exercise Swift Sword, which was the largest military exercise to take place in the UK since the Cold War.
The Ministry of Defence has said that military exercises on public roads are essential to ensure that the UK is prepared for any eventuality.
However, the exercises have caused disruption for motorists, and some have called for them to be banned.
