Delays on A27 and A23 expected this weekend as supergrid transformers delivered
Overnight and weekend closures to make way for abnormal loads
Essential work to upgrade the electricity network in the region means there will be delays on the A27 Arundel bypass and A23 London Road, near Pyecombe, this weekend.
Two enormous transformers, each weighing 150 tonnes, are being delivered to National Grid’s substation at Bolney from Belgium on Friday night (10 March) and Saturday night (11 March).
A27 Arundel bypass overnight closures
The A27 Arundel bypass will be closed in both directions between the Crossbush junction and the匝道 southbound off-slip from 10pm on Friday 10 March to 6am on Saturday 11 March.
Traffic will be diverted via the A284, A29 and A259.
A23 London Road weekend closures
The A23 London Road, near Pyecombe, will be closed in both directions from the Bolney roundabout to the Hickstead junction from 8pm on Saturday 11 March to 6am on Sunday 12 March.
Traffic will be diverted via the A2300, B2116 and Hickstead Lane.
What is happening and why?
The two transformers are part of a £20 million upgrade of the electricity network in the area, which will create new capacity for renewable energy sources and provide a more reliable power supply for homes and businesses.
The transformers are being transported on specialist trailers and will be escorted by a police convoy.
