The European Parliament has awarded its prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez. The prize recognizes Lopez's unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights in Venezuela, where he has been imprisoned for his political activism since 2014.

In a statement, the European Parliament praised Lopez's "courageous and tireless efforts to promote democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Venezuela." The parliament also condemned the Venezuelan government's "repression and intimidation of political opponents" and called for Lopez's immediate release.

Lopez, a Harvard-educated economist, was first arrested in 2014 on charges of inciting violence during anti-government protests. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison, but was released in 2017 under house arrest. In 2019, he was briefly freed during a failed uprising against President Nicolas Maduro but was re-arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Despite his imprisonment, Lopez has remained a vocal critic of the Maduro government and a symbol of resistance for the Venezuelan people. He has called for free and fair elections, the release of political prisoners, and an end to the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

The Sakharov Prize is awarded annually to individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Past winners include Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the Dalai Lama.

The award to Lopez is a strong signal of the European Union's support for democracy and human rights in Venezuela. It is also a reminder of the Maduro government's continued repression of its political opponents and the need for international pressure to secure Lopez's release and the restoration of democracy in Venezuela.
