Sudden death of a former professional footballer
The former professional footballer Daniel Engelbrecht is dead. The 35-year-old died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, as his former club FC St. Pauli announced on Monday. The cause of death is not yet known.
Engelbrecht played for FC St. Pauli from 2007 to 2010 and made 67 appearances for the Kiezklub in the 2nd Bundesliga. He also played for 1. FC Nürnberg, Karlsruher SC and Erzgebirge Aue.
FC St. Pauli expressed its condolences to Engelbrecht's family and friends. "We are deeply saddened by the news of Daniel's sudden death," said sporting director Andreas Bornemann. "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."
Engelbrecht's former coach at FC St. Pauli, Holger Stanislawski, also expressed his condolences. "I am shocked and deeply saddened by Daniel's death," said Stanislawski. "He was a great guy and a talented footballer. My thoughts are with his family and friends."
The cause of Engelbrecht's death is not yet known. The police have launched an investigation.
