Gosens absent again: comeback against Leipzig seems impossible

Lazaro meanwhile trains again

After his farewell game in the DFB Cup, Robin Gosens has now also sat out the friendly against Olympique Lyon on Saturday - and the left-back will probably miss the Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig next week as well.

The 27-year-old had to cancel his participation in the cup game against second division club Erzgebirge Aue (0-3) with muscular problems. National coach Hansi Flick therefore did not nominate Gosens for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Romania and North Macedonia.

And now the Italian returnee has also sat out the friendly against the French cup winner. "Robin has problems with his calf. I don't think he'll be able to play against Leipzig either," said coach Frank Kramer after the 4-1 defeat against Lyon.

Gosens also presented himself as depressed after the game: "That eats away at me," said the left-back. "I'm a guy who wants to be there, who wants to perform, who wants to help the team. I'm simply not able to do that at the moment. I'm not feeling good at the moment. I hope that it will be over soon."

For Kramer, Gosens' renewed failure is "very, very bitter". The coach emphasized: "I feel very sorry for Robin, of course. But we have to accept it now and take it into account in our planning."

Meanwhile, Valentino Lazaro is on the way back. The Austrian trained with the team again on Saturday, after he had suffered a muscular problem in the cup game against Aue. However, a starting eleven appearance against Leipzig comes too early for Lazaro.
