Gosens vents Union frustration through Fischer memorial

Berlin (dpa) - Robin Gosens has been a divisive figure at Union Berlin since his summer move from Inter Milan, but he showed his commitment to the club with a classy gesture on Saturday.

The Germany international, who has struggled for game time this season, paid for a memorial to be erected in honor of Union legend Harald Fischer, who died in 2016.

The memorial, which was unveiled at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei before Union's 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, features a bronze bust of Fischer and a plaque with the words: "In memory of our beloved Harald Fischer, who dedicated his life to Union Berlin."

In a statement, Gosens said: "Harald Fischer was a true legend of Union Berlin. He played for the club for over 20 years and was a role model for everyone at the club. I wanted to do something to honor his memory and show my commitment to Union."

Fischer, who played for Union from 1965 to 1988, made 453 appearances for the club and scored 123 goals. He was a key member of the team that won the East German Cup in 1968 and 1970.

Gosens' gesture has been praised by Union fans and officials. Club president Dirk Zingler said: "This is a wonderful gesture from Robin. It shows that he is a true Unioner and that he understands the importance of our history."

Gosens' performance on the pitch has been less impressive. The 29-year-old has started just three games in the Bundesliga this season and has yet to score a goal.

However, his gesture off the pitch has shown that he is committed to the club and that he is determined to win over the fans.
