Head Louse, Pediculus Humanus: A Common Problem with Simple Solutions
What is pediculosis?
Pediculosis is the medical term for a head lice infestation. It is a common problem, especially among school children. Head lice are small, wingless insects that live on the human scalp. They feed on blood and lay their eggs on the hair shafts. Head lice infestations are not dangerous, but they can be itchy and uncomfortable.
Signs and symptoms
The most common symptom of a head lice infestation is an itchy scalp. Other symptoms can include:
- Small, white eggs (nits) on the hair shafts
- Red bumps on the scalp
- Sores on the scalp from scratching
Treatment
There are a number of different treatments available for head lice. The most common treatment is over-the-counter shampoos and lotions that contain insecticides. These products can kill lice and their eggs. Other treatments include:
- Prescription medications
- Home remedies, such as using tea tree oil or vinegar
- Wet combing
Prevention
There are a few things you can do to prevent head lice:
- Avoid head-to-head contact with someone who has head lice.
- Do not share hats, scarves, or other personal items with someone who has head lice.
- Wash your hair regularly with shampoo and conditioner.
- Check your child's head for lice regularly, especially after they have been in contact with someone who has lice.
Head lice are a common problem, but they are easily treated. If you think you or your child has head lice, see your doctor or pharmacist for treatment.
