Hofreiter (Grüne): "I understand Poland's response to hybrid warfare from Belarus and Russia"
German politician expresses understanding for Poland's reaction to the instrumentalization of migrants by Belarus and Russia
Berlin - The chairman of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Roth, on Thursday expressed understanding for Poland's response to the instrumentalization of migrants by Belarus and Russia against the EU. "I maintain the closest possible contact with my colleagues in the European Parliament and also with our Polish partners," Roth told the German Press Agency in Berlin. According to Roth, the Polish government is "faced with a huge challenge" with the increasing number of migrants at the border with Belarus.
Roth: "Poland is facing a huge challenge"
The EU and Germany must now "show solidarity and support Poland in protecting its external borders," Roth demanded. Warsaw is currently strengthening its border with Belarus with increased military deployment and a border fence. Roth emphasized that the EU must "solve this problem together with Belarus." He added that the EU must also address the "root causes" of the refugee crisis, such as the political situation in the countries of origin of the migrants. Roth pointed out that the EU is already providing financial support to Belarus' neighboring countries to improve the situation there.

The Polish government has accused Belarus of deliberately bringing migrants to the border in order to put pressure on the EU to accept more refugees. Roth also criticized Belarus. "The Lukashenko regime is using people as pawns in its power game against the EU," he said. The EU had previously imposed sanctions on Belarus because of human rights violations and the falsification of the presidential election in August 2020.

Roth called on the EU to continue to support Poland in protecting its external borders. "We must not allow Lukashenko to instrumentalize human suffering to blackmail the EU," he said. The EU must also address the "root causes" of the refugee crisis, such as the political situation in the countries of origin of the migrants. Roth pointed out that the EU is already providing financial support to Belarus' neighboring countries to improve the situation there.
