Iowa DNR Conservation Officer Reports Best Numbers of Pheasants on His Greene County Route as Pheasant Hunting Season Opens Tomorrow
Pheasant hunting season opens tomorrow, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officer Tyler Harms said the number of pheasants in Greene County are the best he has seen in years.
"I've been seeing a lot of birds out there," Harms said. "I've been working with landowners and they're all reporting the same thing. The numbers are up."
Harms said the increase in pheasants is likely due to a combination of factors, including good nesting conditions last spring and a mild winter.
The pheasant hunting season runs from Oct. 29 to Jan. 10, and Harms said hunters should expect to see plenty of birds.
"I think it's going to be a great year for pheasant hunting," Harms said. "The birds are there, and the weather is cooperating. I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the season."
Here are some tips for pheasant hunting in Greene County:
- Hunt in areas with good cover, such as cornfields, CRP fields, and grasslands.
- Walk slowly and quietly, and be aware of your surroundings.
- Use a dog to help you find birds.
- Be patient. Pheasants can be difficult to find, but they are worth the effort.
