Palace boss Glasner explains Mateta's slow start
Eagles manager rues missed chances as Palace are held at home by Aston Villa
Patrick Vieira admitted Jean-Philippe Mateta was "frustrated" after squandering several chances in Crystal Palace's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.
The French striker had two great opportunities to give Palace the lead in the first half but failed to convert and missed another good chance after the break.
Vieira said: "He was frustrated with himself because he had two or three good chances to score. He's a striker and he wants to score goals. He's working hard and I'm sure he'll get his goals soon.
Mateta, who joined Palace from Mainz in January 2021, has scored nine goals in 43 appearances for the Eagles.
He started the season well with two goals in Palace's first three games, but has not scored since.
Vieira added: "He's a young player and he's still learning. He's working hard and I'm sure he'll get better and better."
Palace are now winless in their last four Premier League games and have slipped to 14th in the table.
Vieira said: "We're disappointed with the result. We had a lot of chances to win the game but we didn't take them.
We need to be more clinical in front of goal. We're creating chances but we're not taking them. That's something we need to work on."
Palace host Manchester City in their next Premier League game on Saturday.
