Overview
The Persian Gulf Pro League (PGPL) is the top professional football league in Iran. It was founded in 2001 and is organized by the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The league consists of 16 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Azadegan League. The PGPL is one of the most competitive leagues in Asia and has produced some of the continent’s top players.
History
The PGPL was founded in 2001 as a replacement for the Takht Jamshid Cup, which had been the top football league in Iran since 1970. The league was initially known as the Iran Pro League, but was renamed to the Persian Gulf Pro League in 2006. The PGPL has grown in stature over the years and is now one of the most popular leagues in Asia. It has attracted some of the world’s top players, including Ali Karimi, Mehdi Mahdavikia, and Javad Nekounam.
Teams
The PGPL consists of 16 teams. The teams are: Esteghlal, Persepolis, Sepahan, Tractor, Gol Gohar, Foolad, Mes Kerman, Aluminium Arak, Naft Masjed Soleyman, Paykan, Sanat Naft, Saipa, Zob Ahan, Havadar, and Shahr Khodro. The teams play each other twice during the season, once at home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion. The bottom two teams are relegated to the Azadegan League.
Winners
The most successful team in the history of the PGPL is Persepolis, who have won the league title 14 times. Esteghlal is second with 9 titles, followed by Sepahan with 5 titles. The league has been dominated by these three teams in recent years, with Persepolis winning the title in each of the last five seasons.
