Russell Martin: Southampton boss retains backing from club hierarchy despite winless Premier League start
Under-pressure Saints boss Russell Martin has received the backing of the club's hierarchy despite a winless start to the Premier League season.
Southampton have lost their first four games of the campaign and sit bottom of the table, but Martin has been given the green light to continue in his role.
The south coast club's board of directors met on Monday to discuss Martin's future, but they have decided to give him more time to turn things around.
This should come as no surprise given the fact that Southampton played against top four from last season: Tottenham, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
The Saints were competitive against both Spurs and United, earning a point against Spurs and losing by just one goal to United.
They were also in the game against Chelsea until they were reduced to 10 men in the second half.
Martin's side have shown some promising signs in attack, but they have been let down by some poor defending.
The Saints have conceded nine goals in their four games, and they have yet to keep a clean sheet.
However, the club's board are confident that Martin can turn things around.
They believe that he is the right man to lead the club forward and that he will eventually be able to get the best out of his players.
Martin has also received the backing of his players.
The players are said to be behind the manager and they believe that he can help them to achieve their goals.
Martin will now be hoping to get his first win as Southampton manager when they take on Wolves at St Mary's on Saturday.
