Socialists, Greens and Liberals challenge Commission’s stance on migration
MEPs demand fair and humane migration policy as Commission presents New Pact on Migration and Asylum
Ahead of the presentation of the European Commission’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum, the Socialists and Democrats, the Greens/EFA and Renew Europe are calling for a fair and humane European migration policy that respects human rights, protects refugees and ensures solidarity among member states.
The three political groups have joined forces to table amendments to the Commission’s proposals, which they believe fall short of addressing the challenges of migration and asylum in Europe.
The amendments call for a more humane approach to migration management, including the establishment of safe and legal pathways for migrants to enter Europe, and the protection of the rights of asylum seekers and refugees.
The groups also want to see a fairer distribution of responsibility for migration and asylum among member states, and an end to the externalisation of migration management to third countries.
Ahead of the debate on the Commission’s proposals in the European Parliament, the three political groups issued a joint statement, saying:
“We believe that the EU must have a fair and humane migration policy that respects human rights, protects refugees and ensures solidarity among member states. The Commission’s proposals fall short of these goals, and we will be tabling amendments to improve them.”
The debate on the Commission’s proposals will take place in the European Parliament on Tuesday, 23 September.
