VIAS: 110 pedestrians injured in traffic accidents in September

Now that the clocks have gone back, darkness falls earlier in the evening. Autumn is therefore a risky period for pedestrians. Especially in the early evening, many pedestrians are on the road, often in poor lighting conditions.

In September, VIAS registered 110 pedestrians who were injured in a traffic accident in Flanders. This is more than the 84 pedestrians who were injured in August. This is due, among other things, to the return of school traffic and the fact that the evenings are getting darker earlier.

Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in traffic, especially when it is dark. They are often overlooked by drivers, especially when they are wearing dark clothing. In addition, pedestrians are often not aware of the dangers of traffic and make mistakes, such as crossing the road in front of a moving car.

VIAS therefore advises pedestrians to be extra careful in autumn. Pay attention to your surroundings and make sure you are visible to drivers. Wear light-colored clothing or reflective clothing, and use a flashlight or headlamp if necessary.

Drivers can also contribute to the safety of pedestrians. Drive carefully, especially in areas where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic. Pay extra attention to intersections and driveways, and give pedestrians plenty of room when passing.

Together we can make the roads safer for pedestrians.
