Ann-Marie McGlynn interview: 'I probably didn't know what depression was before that ... and I remembered then why I loved running'
Olympic marathon runner Ann-Marie McGlynn is one of Ireland's most successful athletes, but she has battled with depression throughout her career.
McGlynn first experienced depression in her early 20s, but it was not until she was in her late 30s that she was diagnosed. She has since spoken openly about her experiences in order to help others who may be struggling with mental health issues.
In a recent interview with The Irish Times, McGlynn said that she believes her depression was caused by a combination of factors, including the pressure of competing at the highest level and the loss of her father.
"I think I probably didn't know what depression was before that," she said. "And I remembered then why I loved running."
McGlynn said that running has been a major help in her recovery from depression. "It's a way of clearing my head and just focusing on one thing," she said. "It's a way of getting out of my own head and just being in the moment."
McGlynn's story is an inspiration to others who may be struggling with mental health issues. It shows that it is possible to overcome depression and achieve great things.
