England's Shaun Wane on Samoa's 'exciting' emergence, World Cup hopes and savouring Newcastle experience
England coach Shaun Wane says Samoa will be a “great test”
Samoa's emergence as a force in rugby league is exciting for the international game, says England coach Shaun Wane.
Wane will take his charges to Newcastle on Saturday to face Samoa in what is likely to be a dress rehearsal for the World Cup final later this year.
The Pacific nation have lost only two of their last 15 Tests and will provide a stern examination of England's credentials.
England looking to win in St. James' Park
Wane said: "I'm looking forward to the game - Samoa are a great test for us. They've got some terrific players across the park and they'll give us a real challenge.
"It's important for us to measure ourselves against the best and Samoa are certainly one of the best teams in the world at the moment.
Samoa a "very good footballing team"
"They're a very good footballing team, they've got some real strike players and they're well-coached.
"We're expecting a tough game but we're confident in our own ability, and we're looking forward to the challenge." Wane is also relishing the prospect of coaching England in front of a sell-out crowd at Newcastle's St James' Park.
"It's going to be a great occasion," he said, "and hopefully we can put on a good show for the fans."
Wane enjoying the experience of coaching in Newcastle
Wane has enjoyed his experience of coaching in Newcastle so far, and he is looking forward to building on the relationship between the city and the English team.
"I love it here. The people are so friendly and welcoming and there's a real passion for rugby league in the city,
"We've had some great support from the fans so far, and I'm sure that will continue on Saturday.
"I'm looking forward to working with the Knights and the Newcastle community in the long-term and helping to grow the game in the region."
