Outbreak Sickens Dozens in Multiple States
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's restaurants in several states. As of July 2023, the outbreak has sickened at least 47 people in six states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio.
Symptoms of E. coli Infection
Symptoms of E. coli infection can include: - Severe stomach cramps - Diarrhea (often bloody) - Nausea - Vomiting - Fever - Fatigue
In severe cases, E. coli infection can lead to kidney failure, brain damage, or even death.
Investigation Underway
The CDC is working with state and local health officials to investigate the outbreak and identify the source of the contamination. McDonald's has closed several restaurants in the affected states and is cooperating with the investigation.
Advice for Consumers
The CDC advises consumers to: - Cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) - Wash hands thoroughly after handling raw meat - Avoid consuming raw or undercooked meat, including ground beef
